PLAY THERAPY IN SCHOOLS AND ARRANGED BY PARENTS

I work with families and children privately and sometimes in schools. I offer parent consultations where children are either very young or there is no capacity for play therapy sessions.  Sometimes sharing some of the skills I use in play therapy so that parents can use these at home can shift things and build confidence in managing anxiety or dysregulation.

Individual play therapy sessions generally run for a minimum of 12 weeks and are based in North Guildford, Surrey, UK.  I meet with parents/ carers every 6-8 weeks to review targets and progress as well as offering regular communication by email or phone.

Before I start working with a client I will take a full developmental history and detailed information around the presenting needs of the child. This helps me to understand the whole picture and the child’s world.  It is helpful to also be in touch with the child’s school so that everyone can work together in a holistic way.

SCHOOLS

SCHOOL TRAINING

I can offer school training around anxiety, emotional regulation, therapeutic play skills and attachment.
If you are looking for a play therapist based in your school, please contact me to discuss further.  I offer either half day package working with a minimum of 2 children or a full day package working with 4 children.
I have previously supported schools with supervision for staff wellbeing.
I am able to deliver training up to 2 ½ hours (to be negotiated) to staff in schools or children’s centres on the following topics:
  • The Use of Therapeutic Play Skills In A Primary Setting.
  • The Use of Therapeutic Play Skills In A Early Years Setting.
  • Understanding Attachment.
  • Supporting Children with Emotional or Behavioural Difficulties.

FULL DAY

As part of a Full Day package I can offer to work with 3 to 4 children.

I am also able to provide a informal session or surgery for teachers who may wish to think about any particular children in their classroom who are struggling emotionally which may in turn be impacting on their behaviour or learning progress. This time to reflect together might be an opportunity to think about strategies to support the child in school as well as enabling staff to feel more confident in understanding their inner world and how best to meet their needs.

My fee for this includes record keeping, play equipment, external supervision, transport, BAPT membership and professional indemnity insurance.

HALF DAY

As part of a morning or afternoon working with 1- 2 children, record keeping, equipment, external supervision, transport and professional indemnity insurance.

Please contact me for further information on fees and to discuss the requirements of your particular setting.

PARENTS / CARERS

PRIVATE

Parents often contact me because their child is experiencing anxiety and difficulties around school attendance.
My advice is always to firstly look at the school website and the Inclusion policy. This will detail ways that schools support your child when they are struggling and should be a helpful first step.  Asking for a meeting with the school SENCO or Inclusion Lead is recommended to highlight your concerns and find out the support available.

The Local Authority will also have what is called the Local Offer webpage and this details how the Council supports educational needs and what is available.

The Local Offer will detail how schools should support Emotionally Based School Avoidance – known as EBSNA or EBSA. There are some helpful resources and information on these sites.

This can be an incredibly worrying and stressful time for parents / carers trying to understand the root cause of the anxiety.
